Hens and Chicks is a common name for a large group of succulents called Sempervivum. These are some tough little plants that thrive best in well draining, rocky soils. I grow mine along the edge of my dry river bed.
Depending on the variety, they can grow in hardiness zones 6 to 11, but a few varieties can even survive in zone 4 winters. Hens and Chicks also do great in containers with special well draining potting mix and can grow nicely in the greenhouse.
